The Facebook Account Deletion Process

Your account will be ‘deactivated’ for two weeks. After this period it will be permanently deleted.
Do not login to your account during this time. It will cancel the deletion request.
Do not be fooled into switching to a deactivation request. Deactivation is NOT deletion.
Consider an account deletion epitaph to notify friends of your departure.

What Happens To Your Data?

In theory, deleting your account immediately removes all Facebook data related to you. In realityit's more complicated, taking about a month.
Allegations of complicity with National Security Agency surveillance suggest that your data may never truly be deleted.
You can still cleanse your Facebook presence for everyone else,
  • Delete any sensitive content that you have posted.
  • Contact friends about content that you would like deleted.
Backup your data before deletion if you'd like a copy.

Leaving Social Data Behind

As hard as you try, some personally identifiable information may remain. This could be something as simple as your name on a message.
You have little control over this or what others share about you in future. The most you can realistically do is ask your friends to respect your privacy.
Data shared with apps and advertisers is with them forever. As a Facebook user you are leaving behind a valuable personal data footprint.

Enjoy Your Freedom

‘And remember, where you have a concentration of power in a few hands, all too frequently men with the mentality of gangsters get control. History has proven that. All power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely.’

Backup Facebook Data

Facebook allows you to download your information.
This includes timeline information, posts, photos and more.
It is recommended that you download a copy of your information before deleting your account.

Account Deletion Epitaph

Your profile absence could be confusing for friends and family. It is important to acknowledge that you are leaving Facebook.
Something like,
I will not be available via Facebook from this point on as I am deleting my Facebook account.
I can be contacted at your@email.com
Please delete any data in your Facebook account that involves me. This includes conversations we've had and photos of me that you can part with.
Please respect my privacy and avoid posting anything in future that personally identifies me.
Thank you.
Personalise as you see fit. To ensure that people have the opportunity to see it, consider delaying account deletion for a few days.

Deactivation And Deletion Are Very Different

Deactivation hides your account, but your data is preserved in case you wish to return.
Deletion destroys your Facebook data. As a result you cannot recover it.
You can always backup your data then delete your account.
Here is Facebook's summary of the differences.

Facebook's Interests

A deactivated account allows Facebook to keep your data. You are not adding to it, but it is still valuable to advertisers.
As a result, Facebook encourages account deactivation as opposed to full deletion of your data.

Deleting Facebook Data

Facebook is a complex piece of software engineered to deliver social data quickly.
Almost every piece of data on Facebook is socially linked. For example,
  • Each photo can contain tags and comments from different people.
  • Messages are present in the inbox of all conversation members.
If you delete a message to a friend, the message will remain in their inbox.
Maintaining these data relationships makes deletion difficult.
Even data tagged for deletion can still take 90 days to be deleted.
‘It typically takes about one month to delete an account, but some information may remain in backup copies and logs for up to 90 days.’ — Facebook Data Use Policy.
Keep in mind that Facebook's value involves retaining as much social data as possible. Instant data removal is not the priority.
‘For content that is covered by intellectual property rights, like photos and videos (IP content), you specifically give us the following permission, subject to your privacy and application settings: you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, worldwide license to use any IP content that you post on or in connection with Facebook (IP License). This IP License ends when you delete your IP content or your account unless your content has been shared with others, and they have not deleted it.’ — Facebook's Statement of Rights and Responsibilities.
